Taprobane Seafood Group is located in the North-Western Province of Sri Lanka, a prime location that allows it easy access to the main fishing harbors’ of Trincomalee, Galle, Negombo and Mannar as well as putting it within a half hours distance to the international airport. The company utilizes the yield obtained from both multi-day vessels and regular day boats, which is then immediately iced and transported in reefer trucks. Upon arrival at the factory, the product is checked for its quality before being processed under stringent quality controls that confidently meet both EU and HACCP standards.
Using both plate and blast freezers TSG products are frozen to minus 40 degrees Celsius, in order to ensure a core temperature of minus 25 degrees or below. It is then packed in to master cartons and stored within minus 20 degrees cold storage until it is shipped out in reefer containers.
Blue Swimming Crab
Sri Lanka is the only country in Asia to be certified by the prestigious Monterey Bay Aquarium as recommended for ethical sourcing of the Blue Swimming Crab. Taprobane was the driving force behind Sri Lanka’s first-ever eco-recommended fisher y and Asia’s first-ever blue swimming crab fisher y in January 2019.
Taprobane has worked hand in hand with local government authorities, research agencies and blue swimming crab fishing communities to ensure that Sri Lanka’s hither to untouched blue swimming crab fisher y is her vested sustainably. The fisherman that partner with Taprobane use sustainable fishing methods i.e., using small boats required for shallow sea fishing which do not cause pollution nor destroy coral reefs or affect the marine ecosystem. This is an on-going process for TSG towards sustainable development of Sri Lanka’s seafood sector and to achieve the highest level of recommendation on a global sphere as the Best Choice in Eco Recommended Fisheries.
Vanamei Shrimps
Taprobane is the pioneer of SPF Vannamei in Sri Lanka, a shrimp variety which is disease free yet on par with black tiger shrimp in terms of taste and owns the only hatchery that brings down broodstock from Hawaii for breeding. As of July 2021, the Government of Sri Lanka put forth a law to ensure only disease-free shrimp broodstock could be farmed in Sri Lanka. TSG found itself in a first mover position to benefit from this regulation and today boasts of the largest SPF Vannamei hatcher y in the country. 2021 has seen more and more shrimp farmers convert to Vannamei, away from the earlier successful Black Tiger Prawns. The expansion by the company into Shrimp farming is another way in which it has provided more employment opportunities in Sri Lanka, increasing export opportunities by way of shouldering the development of the national economy.
